Google search now uses many heuristics, but was founded on the PageRank algorithm. This algorithm meant that in the days when was happy that the desired result was on the first page of a sera list, Google were cobfident enough that they had a "I'm feeling lucky"" btton that took you straight to the top-ranked result. Note that the success of this was not in the finding of matching web pages, but in the ranking their potential importance.
